Transport and infrastructure

With everywhere only a 30-minute commute away, getting around Canberra is easy.

Transport infrastructure and local travel

Canberra is connected by our expanding public transport system. Getting around the city is easy. Travel times are much shorter than in other Australian capital cities.

We’re extending our successful light rail network from the City Centre to Woden. We’re also adding new cycleways and more active travel options so you now have even more ways to get around.

Infrastructure investment

As part of the ACT Infrastructure Plan, we’re working on major infrastructure projects, including:

  • new and modernised public schools
  • hospitals and community health facilities that provide effective, accessible care
  • modern, efficient public transport services
  • infrastructure to support climate action, energy and the environment
  • venues to develop a vibrant arts, sports and entertainment culture.

Technology infrastructure

Urban and city renewal keeps Canberra thriving. With a focus on embracing the new and being future-ready, we have:

  • Australia’s largest deployment of free WiFi for public use
  • smart street lights
  • smart parking with real-time availability and payment
  • ‘digital backpacks’ for students to provide online learning and resource capability
  • public charging stations for electric vehicles.
