One of the biggest questions people have when considering a move to Canberra is where to live.
There’s no one right answer. Ask a local for advice and they’re bound to have an opinion (and you’ll likely learn about the friendly rivalry between North and South Canberrans) but it really depends on what’s important to you.
One thing is for sure, wherever you choose to settle – everywhere is convenient. Find out more about getting around on our Transport page.
Whether you’re keen to rent or buy a modern apartment in the thick of the action, a renovator’s delight, or a family home with plenty of room to move, there are plenty of options.
The best place to start is by getting to know Canberra.
Real estate websites Allhomes or Zango are our homegrown versions of Domain and realestate.com. They’re a treasure trove of information about Canberra’s suburbs and residential areas – from location and lifestyle profiles to vital information on median house prices and local schools.
Think about what you want in a home. Do you want to be close to the hustle and bustle or do you like things on the quieter side – walking distance to nature reserves or the shops?
If a low-maintenance apartment with cafes and entertainment on your doorstep sounds up your alley, you might like to consider living in the Canberra CBD or one of the city’s town centres – they all have higher-density living options.
If a larger block and lots of green space is more your style, Canberra’s suburbs were made for you! The good news is that many suburbs have their own local shops – perfect for grabbing a coffee made by your new favourite barista or a place to get to know your neighbours.
The suburb you live in will affect the cost of buying or renting a home. Like any city, inner suburbs tend to be a little more expensive. Suburbs further out may give you more for your dollar. Even if you choose to live in an outer suburb, it should still only take 30 minutes or less to drive anywhere in Canberra.
