If you’ve ever dreamt of working or owning a business in the tourism industry, now may be your time.

Classed as a tourism employment ‘hot spot’, one in seven new jobs created in the ACT is in the tourism sector.

According to the latest Tourism Research Australia data, around 17,000 people in the ACT now work in tourism industries, with an additional 1,100 roles created last year alone.

The unprecedented growth in our tourism industry is reflected in the number of visitors to Canberra: almost three million tourists, 2.65 million from within Australia and almost 230,000 from overseas, visited here in 2017.

There are a number of factors that are contributing to this extraordinary growth. In the last few years we’ve seen the launch of two international airlines now flying directly to Canberra. The ACT Government has worked closely with the industry to identify new growth opportunities. And a new generation of Canberrans are rising on the scene with a host of new attractions and events.

To top it all off, Canberra was named as one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit by Lonely Planet earlier this year, further cementing our position as a sought-after tourism destination.

And clearly all these efforts are paying off, with tourism’s total contribution to the ACT’s GSP for 2016-17 estimated at $2.3 billion.
