Skyfire, Canberra’s largest single day event, will return as part of the Enlighten Festival on 14 March 2020 celebrating its 32nd year.

With a rich history, and beloved by locals and visitors alike, Skyfire has been a hallmark of the Canberra events calendar for over a generation. The first Skyfire was held on 18 March 1989, as FM 104.7’s contribution to the Canberra Festival that year and the newly launched radio stations way of thanking the people of Canberra for welcoming them into their daily lives. The show was simulcast on FM104.7 featuring artists like INXS and Jimmy Barnes through the soundtrack. Over the next few years, Skyfire grew in popularity as the firework technology changed and new launching positions were used at various times, such as the National Library of Australia and Commonwealth Bridge. Over time the launch positions have been centralised to the barges and pontoons on LBG as it offers the best all-round viewing opportunity for everyone around the lake and on the surrounding ‘mountains’ and tall buildings.

The Regatta Point Stage, or ‘Skyfire Central’ was introduced in the mid-2000’s to offer further entertainment over a longer period of time featuring live artists such as Antony Callea, Vanessa Amorosi, Justice Crew, Potbelleez, Jessica Mauboy and Samantha Jade to name a few. In recent years the involvement of the ADF has allowed Skyfire to host fast jet handling displays, low-level flyovers, helicopter flying displays, fast boat rescues, the Roulettes and Australia’s Federation Guard and their always impressive artillery firings from Gallipoli Reach throughout the evening and as the first ‘bang’ of Skyfire.

This year, 32 years later, Skyfire continues to evolve. Hit 104.7 Skyfire 2020 will see the introduction of Skyfire EATS in Commonwealth Park featuring bars and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Then, join Ned and Josh at Skyfire Central at Regatta Point from 6pm with a huge line up of live entertainment. Ensure you get the best spot by Lake Burley Griffin ready for the commencement of the fireworks display from 8.30pm, timed to a 20 minute soundtrack broadcast on Hit 104.7.

Hit 104.7 Skyfire is on Saturday 14 March at Regatta Point, with the fireworks commencing at 8:30pm. Full details can be found at
