Adam McGrath is a local Canberra photographer and director of Hcreations Photography. We sat down with him to find out what he loves best about the nation’s capital.
As a born and bred Canberran, what makes this city such a great place to live?
There are so many reasons! I love that everything is so close and there’s such a broad range of things that are accessible in a small space. I live just outside of Canberra, and as a family, we have space and the rural lifestyle, while still being close to the city – it’s the best of both worlds.
There’s also this one degree of separation type thing here, where everyone knows everyone. Especially when it comes to business, that’s a really good thing.
Why is Canberra a great place to work, especially as a photographer?
I love working in Canberra because there’s such diversity in a small proximity. I have a broad range of clients who I think of more as friends, which keeps work fun. Everyday feels like I’m working in a different office!
One of the cool things about Canberra is the opportunities I’ve had to travel abroad for work and I think it comes down to the one degree of separation thing and the power of word-of-mouth. There’s so much innovation and passion, and constant stream of new and exciting things that I really dig.
As someone who lives rurally, how have you managed still working in the city?
For a long time when I lived in town, I always had this dream to live out in the bush, then go into the city and do my work, but then be able to come back and leave my work behind… Canberra has made this possible. As a family we really love living out here. We have the space to do what we want and our son will grow up with space galore.
It’s really hard to find that anywhere else. As Canberra has grown, it’s become easier to live this lifestyle. To some people it might seem like we live a far way out, but it’s literally a 30-minute drive – from the bush to the heart of the city. You can even ride your push-bike!
What would you say to someone who is thinking of living or working in Canberra?
People will discover the city for themselves because it has so much to offer. There are so many different little facets and circles and there’s something for everyone. Everything in Canberra is progressing and there’s so much young energy in so many different facets of business. The way I see it, things are only going to get better – Canberra is pumping!
