Local gifts a must for your Christmas wish list

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Canberra’s design community is showing off all that it has to offer.

Our city’s most talented and creative designers are ready for the busy festive season—urging us all to consciously buy Canberran these holidays.

You don’t need us to tell you that buying local is best. Alongside skipping busy shopping centres and crowded malls, local markets means a more personal and unique gift offering which have the added benefit of supporting our resident designers.

Lisa Cahill, a Canberra-based internationally renowned glass artist and designer, says our important purchases mean designers can continue to develop and create unique pieces.

“Shopping local allows you to get to know your local designers and helps to support them, so they can keep making great designs,” says Lisa.

After living all over the world, Lisa settled in Canberra; the place which originally inspired her to undertake glasswork.

“I think Canberra is a great place to be a designer. I have been in Canberra for six years now and it’s just keeps getting better,” she said

“I have a studio in amongst the apple orchards and nurseries of Pialligo. I feel like I am in the middle of the countryside yet it’s under 10 minutes and you are in the middle of a town which has great restaurants, local coffee roasters, and design galleries and shops.”

Lisa’s pieces are influenced by our Bush Capital setting.

“There is plenty of inspiration in the nature that surrounds us, I often take my daughter bush walking and I love the view of the Brindabellas during sunset,” she said.

“The beautiful nature around me and being surrounded by mountains is often channelled in my artwork.”

While Canberra has a small arts and design community compared to other places she has lived, Lisa says the tight network has been invaluable.

“Canberra has a really strong and vibrant arts community; the local organisations such as Craft ACT and the Canberra Glassworks provide lots of opportunities for local artists to exhibit and showcase their work to the broader community.”

In time for Christmas, Lisa has created a new range of glass and silver earrings, which are perfect for gift-giving. You can get your hands on your own Lisa Cahill original by heading to her website or visiting the Canberra Glassworks.
