Have you got a free weekend coming up and you’re just not sure what to do with yourself?

Have you been meaning to get to Australia’s capital city for a while now but just haven’t found a reason yet?

Well…Canberra’s festival month is March and it gives you all the excuses you need to indulge in an international weekend of art, culture, fun and food.

You will be spoilt for choice with hundreds of exhibitions, events, and activities across the city and region, guaranteeing something for everyone. Take a look at the full calendar here.

Or, if you like the idea of some recommendations, here are a few of our favourite events happening on the weekend Saturday 18th March and Sunday 19th March.

Saturday 18 March is a standout with a whole host of festivals and events bringing plenty of drinks, food and entertainment to the city.

The Mercure Hotel, one of Canberra’s historical hotels, is holding the 10th annual Canberra Craft Beer and Cider Festival, where you can taste over 100 beers and ciders from all over the nation. Match your drinks with food whilst listening to live bands, and don’t worry about the kids because there are heaps of fun activities for them too.

If beer isn’t your thing, you can still get crafty at Art, Not Apart; a festival for the arts where you can experience interactive installations, performance art, film and projections and more!

Find something unique to take home at the award winning Handmade Market, where over 240 talented Australian artists and designers showcase their designs. You’ll find everything from fashion to furniture, and ceramics to homeware.

If you feel like something fancy, put on your best dress and head down to the Canberra Outlet Centre Charity Race Day for an afternoon of champagne and horse racing.

As the day turns into night the festivities just keep going!

Join over 100,000 people at Skyfire on Lake Burley Griffin, where local radio station, HIT104.7 will be pumping out the latest hits under a spectacular firework show.

And for the sport lovers, get your adrenalin pumping at the Giants v Western Bulldogs game at Manuka Oval or the Raiders v West Tigers at GIO Stadium.

Sunday 19 March is the time to wind down at one of the blockbuster exhibitions to be found at the national galleries and museums. Why not peruse the Versailles: Treasures from the Palace, The Sell: Australian Advertising 1790s to 1990s, or David Attenborough’s virtual reality experiences to name a few.

Don’t forget the world-renowned Balloon Spectacular is wrapping up on the same weekend, so if you’re ready for an early start, you’ll love the sight of dozens of hot air balloons floating up over a gorgeous Canberra sunrise.

March is Canberra’s festival month, with something to delight the whole family every single day.
