5 free Christmas celebrations to make your December merry and bright

It’s Christmas time in Civic and twelve days full of festive fun is soon to be underway.

The paving along City Walk is freshly painted with vibrant pops of colour by local artist Geoff Filmer from Graffik Paint. A forest full of live Christmas trees will soon call Garema Place home and a whole heap of activities are scheduled throughout the month to turn even the grumpiest Grinch into a Christmas convert.

This year, Merry & Bright – Christmas in Civic focuses on summer traditions closer to home. From 14 – 24 December enjoy backyard cricket, a picnic in the park, outdoor movie screenings, a dance party and more.

Celebrate in Civic

City Walk, Garema Place and Petrie Plaza will host roving entertainers, scheduled performances, a trackless train and a live Christmas tree forest on each of the twelve days leading up to Christmas.

Civic Starry DJ Party

14 December
4pm – 10pm

A dance party in Garema Place will have a mix of pop tunes and Christmas classics pumping under the stars. Dance the night away at this all-ages party.

Christmas Play Date in Glebe Park

Sunday 16 December
10am – 4pm

Pack a picnic and set up for the day in Glebe Park. Traditional activities meet summer fun on this merry Saturday. After you’ve made a Christmas card and decorated some cookies join in on the biggest game of backyard cricket Glebe Park has ever seen hosted by Cricket ACT or participate in slam dunk bungee with the University of Canberra Capitals.

Entry to all events is free. Enjoy delicacies from onsite food vendors or relax in the parent’s break out zone on site. Be sure to plan your day and peruse the program for each day of celebrations.

Outdoor Cinema Screenings

Monday 17 December – Friday 21 December
Approximately 8pm

Enjoy free Christmas movies on a big outdoor cinema screen in Glebe Park this December. There are five movie nights to choose from.

Monday 17 December – Muppets Christmas Carol
Tuesday 18 December – The Santa Clause
Wednesday 19 December – The Holiday
Thursday 20 December – Home Alone 2
Friday 21 December – Arthur Christmas

Pancakes with Santa

Saturday 22 December
7am – 9am

Enjoy a special pancake breakfast with Santa before he begins his sleigh ride around the world. Santa will be in Glebe Park with free pancakes from 7am ‑ 9am cooked by Capital Pancakes.

If you haven’t already registered to secure your spot (the breakfast is now sold out) you can visit Santa in his Enchanted Garden at the Canberra Centre after 9am. Located at Ground Level, City Walk (outside David Jones).
