Story by CBR Canberra

A true marker of high summer, Australia Day is here and Canberra will be buzzing with activities, events and entertainment not to be missed. From a truly Aussie breakfast, to a fireworks spectacular and a dog-friendly day out, here’s how you can spend your day.

Great Aussie Day Breakfast

Start your day the right way with some authentic Aussie fare at ActewAGL’s Great Aussie Day Breakfast in Commonwealth Park. Featuring an iconic sausage sizzle, live entertainment and free activities for the kids, the breakfast will be a fun morning and a way to get celebrating early before it heats up.

Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony

Meet our newest mates at the National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony. Located each year at Rond Terrace, the ceremony officially welcomes our new citizens and celebrates the values we share as Australians. Keep your eyes on the sky for the Royal Australian Air Force Flyover and a 21 Gun Salute from Regatta Point.

Queen’s Baton Relay

For a unique Australia Day experience, head to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to catch a glimpse of the Queen’s Baton as it makes its way around Australia in the lead up to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Follow former athletes and community volunteers as they relay the baton around Lake Burley Griffin’s middle basin, before stopping in Commonwealth Park to join in the Australia Day festivities.

Lanyon Homestead’s picnic and open house

If you’re looking for somewhere to unwind over lunch, Lanyon Homestead is holding an Australia Day Picnic. Bring your own picnic, relax on the lawns and soak up some live music and entertainment or enjoy a meal at The Barracks Espresso and Eating House. Follow up lunch with a free tour of the beautifully-restored 19th-century homestead and discover Canberra’s rural history.

AusDay DogDay

Murrumbateman Winery wine dogs, Mollie and Tannin are hosting a special AusDay DogDay for you and your pup. With canine snacks, new smells and adventures for the dogs, and cheese and wine for the humans, what a way to celebrate Australia Day with your four-legged friend.

Australia Day fireworks spectacular

End Australia Day on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin for the annual fireworks spectacular. Meet family and friends, pack a picnic and settle on the lawns of Regatta Point or the National Library for the best views. Foodies can indulge at the marketplace featuring Canberra’s best chefs and local food trucks and the kids will be kept entertained with an obstacle course, face painting and jumping castles. Gasp as the skies light up at 9pm with a dazzling pyrotechnic display set to a distinctly Aussie soundtrack.
