This week, 50 of Canberra’s best and most successful export businesses competed for the title of ACT Exporter of the Year at the Chief Minister’s Export Awards.

As the Territory’s most prestigious business awards, they acknowledge the innovation, hard work and success of Canberra businesses reaching global markets.

Healthcare provider, Aspen Medical, was named 2017’s ACT Exporter of the Year, making this the sixth year they have won the coveted title.

Aspen Medical has become a world leader in the delivery of healthcare solutions, particularly in settings that are remote, challenging or under-resourced. Their clients come from a diverse range of sectors, including Defence, Mining and Resources, Oil and Gas, Government and Humanitarian.

Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Robyn Hendry, said deciding on just one winner was tough, but Aspen Medical proved the frontrunner in the capital’s global success over the past decade.

“All the finalists are successfully exporting their goods and services around the world and it was a very tight race in all the categories. However, Aspen Medical is a very deserving winner.”

“In just over a decade, they have grown into an international business. They operate across Australia, the Pacific, Africa, the Gulf region, the United Kingdom and the USA, and employ more than 2,500 staff,” says Ms Hendry.

For a relatively small city, Canberra has a thriving export community. A recent study shows ACT exports of goods and services have increased by 9.3% over the last five years, making the Territory the fastest growing export region in Australia.

Ms Hendry says each of the finalists in this year’s awards have been leading contributors to the rapid growth of exports in the ACT, paving the way for future export businesses in Canberra.

“Each of the finalists has achieved outstanding growth in international markets over the years. They have opened doors across the globe, not only for their own goods and services, but for Canberra region businesses as a whole,” says Ms Hendry.

Along with being named ACT Exporter of the Year, Aspen Medical was also named the ACT Health and Biotechnology Exporter of the Year.

Other category winners include medical training company, iSimulate and cycling analytics company, Today’s Plan.

iSimulate was awarded the ACT Education and Training Exporter of the Year for their advanced educational technology, which is providing simulation training to healthcare professionals in 35 countries, including New Zealand and America.

Today’s Plan won the ACT E-Commerce Exporter of the Year, after partnering with British professional cycling team, Team Sky, to deliver training prescription and analysis of rider’s performances and training loads.

All national category winners will compete at the Australian Export Awards in Canberra in December.
